Personal Development

Looking back at my progress from the beginning of the introduction of broadcast media, I believe that I have achieved a lot and I have improved as an individual. My teamwork can be credited as I have maintained consistency within the group and I have attended every group meeting required.

Regarding my knowledge on the subject of broadcasting, I believe that I have learnt a variety of things. From leaning how the camera operates in the studio, to how to manage camera shots and angles when the show is live. As a camera operator, I have learnt to communicate well with other camera operators, the floor manager and the team in the gallery behind the studio. I have leant what different equipments are used for such as the belt pack which is used for a talk back system, the headset which is used for communication, and the autocue monitor which I keep stable for the presenters to read from.

I can further express that my knowledge of broadcast media has improved through emulating stylistic features from specific shows such as This Morning (ITV morning show). I can determine the difference between a magazine show and a general show. Through watching multiple series of This Morning, I can relate occurring feature present in the show to my group’s show, from the setting, to the presenters, and the order of the show.

Being a member of the Red Team has taught me to communicate better as well as effectively, allowing me to also have the free will to share ideas with my team mates which were present in the show. I have built a wonderful relationship with each and every group member and I believe that that is the most important aspect of being a group member.

Moreover, the tasks that were set enabled me to extend my knowledge on broadcast media and I leant to apply comparisons between different shows, which will guide my decision as well as the group decisions on what to apply within or own show. Another of the task helped me understand how much I knew about my role within the team. It helped express my knowledge on what I know about being a camera operator.

In addition, with mistakes that occurred within the show, such as the graphics malfunctioning and the mix up of timings, I have learnt within the group, ways of improving on them and preventing them from occurring within our next takes. This task however has motivated me to extend my knowledge and my new experience of broadcast media to the outside world of media, where I believe I will effectively be able to share new ideas, as well as improve on my current skills.

In conclusion, I have become a much stronger person, and have understood the importance of being a committed team member. I also believe that my team mates were satisfied with my contribution to the group as I am sure there aren’t any negative comments which can be derived from my overall effort to the group task. Overall, I have had a wonderful and worthwhile experience.

Evaluation of 113 Mc Broadcast Media

113 Broadcast Media has been a wonderful experience for my team and I. We were faced by many challenges, disappointments and I believe that we have tackled them in the most appropriate way. I can also say that we have learnt a lot as a group. We have learnt how to produce a broadcast show and this can also open doors to areas of Broadcasting in the media in the future for us if any of us are focussing in that direction.

One of my contributions as a team member came from me being a member of the public in the VT about the World Cup, and I am visible a numerous amount of times in the edited clip. However, my main contribution as a team member was being a Camera operator which was my original assigned role. Other areas of my contribution to the team’s show come from the setting up the studio and the settings.

The production as a whole seems to be at a great standard and our hard work reflects through the production. I can conclude that I have gained valuable skills within my role as a Camera Operator and I believe that I can further these skills in the future, which will be valuable to me in terms of career search in the world of Media. My skills to identify devices allocated with the cameras, the studio and the gallery have been enhanced as I can determine the differences between the purposes of a belt-set and a head set, which are all devices that enable talkback within camera operators, floor manager and the members in the gallery.

Overall, working with the Red group has improved my communication and interaction skills. I feel more confident speaking to others as well as listening to instructions. My team and I have a good understanding, and we have built a strong relationship within ourselves, which I believe is one of the most important aspects of being in a group during a production. I have had a wonderful experience and I look forward to what the future has to offer.

Module Questions

June 10, 2010 Leave a comment

As part of our blog presentation, we were given these questions based on Broadcasting and Media, to explore and derive answers for them through knowledge and research. Here are my answers to those questions.

Why are studios used to make programmes when tape is so cheap and available?

There are several reasons why studios are used to make programmes when we have portable technology features such as tapes which are cheap and always available.

Firstly the consistency of the layout is one factor that is very effective within a studio. Having to change locations may cause serious problems and stress whereas maintaining the same location keeps target audiences familiarised with show, as they will understand the sequential feature that exist in their show. In terms of trying to create a mood, or a certain feeling, using a studio makes this much easier as it is easier to create a maybe, homely, educational, or theatrical setting. Basically what is being conveyed is that maintaining the same set design will be much easier in the studio.

What are magazine programmes? Why do Audiences like Them?

Magazine shows are TV programmes that are formatted to include a range of commentaries and interviews. There are two types of T.V shows. They are general magazine shows and specialist magazine shows.

There are noticeable differences between these two types of magazine shows. First of all, the specialist magazine show is a show that is based in the studio which focuses on one subject. For example ‘football focus’ for football lovers on the BBC, and Top Gear, that only has a main focus on Cars. http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/

Whereas, on the other hand, the general magazine shows are made up of considered topics or items on a range of subjects which have been chosen to appeal to its audience. Shows such as This Morning consist of a variety of articles which makes it a very topical show that attempts to entertain as well as inform audiences about latest issues around. Their focus is on different aspects of lifestyle, which also relates to their catch phrase used which is “making life a little easier”. http://www.itv.com/lifestyle/thismorning/?cmpid=V_thismorning

Magazine programmes usually introduce guests and celebrities as they will promote their
show, “which means getting more viewers to watch it”. The whole technique of inviting interesting guests is all for audience’s interests and for this reason audiences like them. They like what they see because they are expecting these varieties of topics to happen in their favourite up-to-date show. http://www.scribd.com/doc/16784614/Magazine-Show-Examples

What are the limitations of magazine programmes? How can they be improved to ensure they continue?

In terms of limitations, we are looking at expiration in chosen topics or lack of new articles. These mainly occur in specialist magazine programmes whereby, the organizations which produce them have to maintain the same subject. Therefore they are limited because a subject can only be expanded up to a certain level, which will as a result cause them to run out of ideas as new subjects cannot be brought in and expanded on.

Furthermore, there are ways of improvement in order to ensure their continuation. The most common ways are usually ensuring that the information and topics provided are relevant to present day issues or else, it has already failed to appeal to multiple audiences. Another way of ensuring that they stay consistent is by maintaining house style and target audience. For example, having Top Gear trying to appeal to the Elderly and young aged children. It is bound to lose interests. Although it is a difficult job to keep consistency, it is also vital that there are back-up plans if the show does fail to impress. If a show is losing audience interests, I believe that it is due to the topics which are being fed to the target audience. The modern-day society tends to submit to a lifestyle of “uses and gratification”. This means that audiences choose what shows they want to watch due to its relevance to their lifestyle maybe, culture, or just simply interests, after this, they show some gratification by commenting on the show, or relating it to the events around. However, to ensure that a show doesn’t lose its value, they have to maintain, up-to date modern interests.

Consider other sources of distribution for magazine type shows

With the emergence of integrated media and media convergence in our society, magazine shows can benefit hugely from audiences participation and input. With the world fast becoming a place whereby the hypodermic syringes are slowly deteriorating, audiences now participate in what they are fed and show interests in what they consume. Their ways of expressing their interests are usually through forms of gratification such as on YouTube where you have viewers’ comments and feedback on what they like about the show and maybe what they would like to see improved. If User Generated contents are available to Magazine shows, they are more likely to expand in viewers, and also expand in ideas due to feedback they will receive.

Basically, these shows should be present on more internet sites where audiences can now have access to their shows and not feel that they have missed out on any specific articles.

Personal Perspective:

June 9, 2010 Leave a comment

From what I’ve seen within my group, I believe that my group has progressed well from the beginning to the end. I believe that our show was a success, and I am glad to have worked with several committed and hard working team members.

Looking at the stages of the show, I believe that the topics we picked we very interesting and relevant within the period that we are currently in. The topics were relevant in a sense that we are at a stage of the world cup and summer festivals. Most teenagers and young adults have their interests in these areas.

Furthermore, if we show was broadcasted to the outside world, I believe that it would be successful to an extent in terms of appealing to its target audience, however, decisions on when the show will be present on T.V will be the only issue. If the show is programmed around the same time as this morning, we would have difficulties appealing to our target audience because it is at early periods of the day when the majority are likely to be at work.

With exceptions of the lack of commitment from team members such as ‘Laura Meades’ and ‘Ben Baker’, we still had a well organised and constructed show. The group in general were very pleased with the outcome and I am also very pleased. I also think the group started off well with everyone contributing to ideas and fitting into their roles.

However, the only improvement we could have made on the show was to maybe explore more different camera angles, play around a little bit with different shots to identify possible interesting ones. The other improvements we could make are ensuring that there aren’t any let downs within the group and plans. Overall, judging on my perspective of the show, I believe that each and every team member worked well.

What’s a show without a title and menu? Not a very good one I’m guessing. For our show we have creative titles and menu’s which introduce audiences to what they are yet to experience from the show. Below are the titles, menu’s and competition clips created for the red group show. As well as the VT’s created for the show.

Dresses for fashion VT

June 9, 2010 Leave a comment

As for the designing of our mannequin, we needed a dress to stand out on it so that when our fashion expert is talking about the visible clothes on his models, we can have a nice fashion background in the section. For the mannequin, a red dress was present on  it as it was quite symboic as well with our group being the red group. I thought that added to the design and layout of the beautiful summery background.

Here’s a picture of the dress:
